Essay writing tutorial: how to create an impressive introduction

When writing any essay, there are certain things that you can do to help improve the quality of the work. One of the most important things to do is to ensure that the introduction is as impressive as possible. If the introduction lacks clarity or does not provoke the reader into wanting to read more, then it is entirely likely that the rest of the essay will suffer as a result. Even if the main body of the essay, as well as a conclusion, details some great ideas, if the reader chooses not to read any further, then all of this would be lost.

Use informative and engaging language

It is important use informative and engaging language in the introduction. By using informative language, you can help to describe what the reader is to expect in the rest of the essay, as well as helping to make it interesting, thereby provoking the desire to read further.

Equally, by using engaging language you can draw the reader in, making them want to read further. If the reader feels that they have a connection with the essay, then they are far more likely to be interested in what you have to say.

Write in the third person

Whilst, in the rest of the essay, you may choose to write in a different style, during the introduction it is best to writing the third person. This helps to give your introduction clarity and ensures that there is an element of impartiality that will suggest that your essay is based on good research, as opposed to just personal opinion which is not backed up by facts.

Understand what it is you are trying to convey with your introduction

It is essential that you understand what you are trying to convey when writing your introduction. If you lack the understanding of the message that you are trying to give, then the reader certainly will not understand what you are trying to say. It is worth taking time to really consider what it is that your essay is about and, therefore, what it is that you want to include - as well as not including - in the essay introduction.

Remember, the introduction is not the conclusion – you are merely try to state the purpose and aims of the essay as opposed to trying to argue the facts and come up with the conclusion there in one go - this is what the rest of the essay is for.
